Debuting in 1993, the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers was an American television show produced by Saban Entertainment and built with footage from the Japanese superhero television show Super Sentai. Power Rangers has since been the term used to describe the franchise of television shows, movies and merchandise that began with the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.
Since Power Rangers gets most of its footage from the Super Sentai series, it features many of the same features as the original, which continue throughout its many series. Each revolves around a team people trained as Rangers who use their special powers to pilot large machines called Zords. Generally the individuals in a Ranger team have unique superpowers in addition to their strength, toughness and martial prowess. The Rangers, with few exceptions, do not use their abilities for personal gain or reveal their superhero identities to the public.
The original series only aired for two years, but the fandom that built around the original cast was quite strong and continues today. In addition, there was a new series almost every year until 2011. Last year it was announced that the original Green Ranger is in talks with the creators to reprise his role in a feature length film. Fandom for the Power Rangers has built around the composition of existing Ranger teams, including often following the canon pairings of the television series. In the mid-2000s when Power Rangers Ninja Storm team had just one female Ranger, slash pairings played a much larger role in fandom, a trend continuing today.
